THE CLIMB DOWN WAS LESS TREACHEROUS, but that did little to placate Cooper. He kept his gaze on Hannah as she walked with Danielle, Michaela, and Jackie, his eyes constantly landing at her feet in case she accidentally tripped. He wanted to catch her.

David and Tyler stuck with him. They kept up a steady stream of chatter for the descent, obviously not bothered by the possibility of seeing a ghost or two — or ten — at the bottom of the hill when they finally reached their destination. Cooper was the only one who made the trip down in silence.

When they finally made it, the old store they’d originally stumbled across serving as their beacon, Cooper took charge of the situation.

“I want camp set up first,” he announced. His tone told Hannah he wasn’t messing around. “No exploring until we’ve made sure we have a safe place to bed down tonight.”

“You’re like zero fun,” Hannah teased, although there was light in her eyes.

“I’m in charge for a reason,” Cooper shot back. “We didn’t bring tents — and I’m still not sure how I feel about that — but I want a fire pit. I also want all the food stored so the animals won’t get it. Then we can separate into pairs to explore. Nobody is exploring alone.”

Hannah’s lower lip poked out.

“Don’t even try.” Cooper extended a warning finger in her direction. “I’ll give you almost anything, Hannah. I won’t give you my approval to possibly get hurt, though.”

“Wow. He is the dad of the group,” David drawled on a grin.

Cooper’s glare grew more pronounced. “Keep it up,” he warned. “I’m going to put you on latrine duty if you’re not careful.”

Hannah’s head snapped up. Obviously, she hadn’t thought that far ahead. “Wait … .”

“We’re digging a hole,” Cooper replied to her unfinished question. “We’ll make sure it’s not close enough to camp to be an issue. Bathroom breaks will also be done in pairs.” He rummaged in his pack until he came up with a roll of toilet paper. “I brought two of these, so let’s not be wasteful, huh? We need to keep them away from the water bottles, too.”

“See, this is where having a dad is a good thing,” Tyler noted. “I mean … who else would’ve remembered to bring the toilet paper?”

“Only him,” Jackie replied. “I agree with him, though. Let’s do the campsite first.”

“Don’t unroll your sleeping bags,” Cooper ordered when Hannah made to do just that.

“Why?” She was caught off guard. “I thought we could zip our sleeping bags together and make it a party.”

The morose expression on her face had Cooper’s lips quirking. “We can zip them together later. I don’t want them unrolled out in the sun, though.” He hesitated and then opted for the truth. “The rattlers might think they look like a fun place to curl up during the day if we do that.”

Hannah’s mouth dropped open. “What?”

“It’s okay,” Cooper said automatically. “I don’t think the rattlers are prevalent down here like they are in the caves.
